Four Star Studios is a Chicago-based studio grown out of four creative professionals deciding they didn’t want to work from home any more.   Once Four Star got together they realized they had all the talent in one place to, in addition to all their other work, put out digital comics in the form of DoubleFeature Comics. “Two comics by top creators for 99¢.”

That seems like an easy enough formula?  Except nobody else was really doing it the way Four Star thought it could be done.  Sean Dove,  Josh Emmons, Mike Norton, and Tim Seeley and their industry friends are putting out original, all-ages material that’s a cinch to get at the right price point.

Musician and composer Steve Van Dam is on this episode!  Steve has had an enviable career by many standards: success with his rock band Everything including charting in the Billboard Top Ten, years of touring, playing a Super Bowl, getting featured in movies and TV shows. Celadore, Muppet Thor, various sketch ups,  and his main strip Max Overacts; these are some recent projects from cartoonist Caanan Grall. Caanan talks about his career including his early influences growing up in Australia, getting a degree in advertising, and his experiences as a working cartoonist in the 2000s.

I’ve read Max Overacts for about a year now, it’s one of my favorite comics and stops on the internet. I was thrilled to get a chance to talk to Caanan a little bit about his process and work, we cover a lot of ground.  I wanted to bother Caanan with more boring process questions, talk about his love of Back to the Future, his Eisner nomination in the Best Digital Comics category and more, but if I kept yammering at him, when would there be time to make stuff?

Broadcast TV news.. what exactly does that mean anymore.  Anchor reporter Susan Bahorich has some thoughts.  I got to know Susan in the early 2000s in small market TV.  There was a lot of being a one-man-band for reporters then,  where you have to do everything that goes into putting together news packages pretty much solo. Higher market stations have different workflows, with photojournalists, editors, assistant editors and more, on top of the usual newsroom and production staff.
Susan talks about changes she’s seen in broadcast news, the typical workflow, and telling a story.
